This website is designed for the purpose of sharing research that has been gathered over the course of several months in determining how viable music therapy is in terms of treating patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Several other factors preceded this thought. By stating “how viable” music therapy is, it is already in some way, considered to hold some value. Therefore, the question needed to be taken a step further. How is music therapy viable to those suffering from dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease? In order to research these questions, it was necessary to gain a greater understanding of dementias such as Alzheimer’s disease. A small amount of research was conducted to learn more of neurological functioning and its association with music. Furthermore, what exactly is music therapy? This research project sought various methods of music therapy and considered how it was being applied/accepted in terms of treatment, etc. This project was conducted by an interview, various academic articles (you can read reviews of the articles in this link here), as well as a documentary consisting of positive first hand accounts of the effect of music for those with Alzheimer’s. While some articles contain quantitative research (results from group and individual session experiments) most of this project was conducted qualitatively. While music therapy cannot cure Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, results of this project confirmed the positivity that music therapy brings both emotionally and mentally to patients.
